On a recent sunny afternoon in Alexander City, Alabama, hundreds of young people enjoyed hours of family fun, as Alexander City Housing Authority sponsored a Strong Families program that featured carnival like rides, a huge water slide, hot dogs and hamburgers hot off the grill, and other goodies and activities that had a smile on the face of all involved.

The event also featured representatives from non-profit organizations offering family support services, and representatives of the Housing Authority's Family Self Sufficiency program. HUD Public Housing Division Director Reginald Marable lived for fourteen years when he was a child in the public housing community visited, and old neighbors got reacquainted. He remembered unit numbers of the two apartments where his family lived and many of the residents and guests also remembered him. Donna Gabel, Executive Director of Alexander City Housing Authority highlighted the efforts to empower residents and engage the children in the community.
