HUD contributes to Stoneridge Villas senior housing facility Opening

Birmingham Field Office Director Recognizes Huntsville, Huntsville Housing Authority and Partners

The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently selected Birmingham Field Office Director Ken Free recently participated in the Grand Opening Ceremony of the Stoneridge Villas, an 80-unit senior housing facility in Huntsville along with the City of Huntsville, Huntsville Housing Authority and community leaders.

HUD played a significant role in making the Stoneridge Villas a reality as 35 Housing Choice Vouchers were approved and allocated as well as 5 units of public housing funding.

"I would like to thank each of you that worked together to make Stoneridge Villas a reality and enhanced the lives of the senior residents of the City of Huntsville," said Free.

Additional funding sources included $2,134,000 in low income housing tax credits and a $640,100 Capital Fund Loan from the Huntsville Housing Authority. At the time of the Grand Opening 79 of the 80 units were already occupied and they were processing the application for the final unit. Residents were ecstatically happy with their brand-new units which included: central air and heat, brand new stoves, refrigerators and dishwashers, and to give the units that final touch of home, a small patio space outside their back doors. Residents will also get to enjoy a large clubhouse that includes a workout room and a full kitchen that will be used in part for monthly pot-luck dinners.

Ken Free noted in his remarks that along with his excitement at being a part of the Grand Opening for this beautiful facility, he was also excited because this was his first public event as Field Officer for the Birmingham Field Office. Partners in this public/private partnership project included: Pennrose-BLOC, Sun Trust Bank, Alabama Housing Finance Authority and LEDIC Property Management. Participating Partners also spoke of hopes for a Phase Two of the property, that would bring even more units for seniors to the site.
