Scattered Site Senior Housing Program in the City of Chandler

Dale & Pat Fleming participants of Scattered Site Senior Housing

The Scattered Site Senior (SSS) Housing program was designed to help a few income qualified seniors to maintain their quality of life. The intent of this program is to assist senior families with managing their housing costs in a senior designated community by offering a below market affordable rent. Income qualified for this program is defined as seniors that make between 50-80 percent of area median income.

Meet Dale and Pat Fleming, who now participate in the Scattered Site Senior Housing Program. The Fleming's are a sweet and charming couple who originally lived in Maine. April 2005, they relocated to Chandler, AZ for their children and grandchildren. Mr. Fleming works as a security guard and Mrs. Fleming works at Target. They have a beautiful black lab "Darth Vader," named by their grandchildren. Darth Vader is an important member of the family. He helped Mr. Fleming recover from his open heart surgery.

The City of Chandler Housing and Redevelopment Division is committed to continue to create and professionally manage innovative housing options for low-income families in the City of Chandler. The City of Chandler Housing and Redevelopment Division (COCHRD) recognizes that tough economic times are impacting seniors. There is a need for affordable housing for seniors.

The City Council of the City of Chandler adopted an ordinance authorizing the acquisition of four senior scattered site residential properties within the City of Chandler. The homes are to be leased to qualified, senior families that make between 50-80 percent of area median income. A total of four properties were purchased in adult, 55+ senior communities.

The (SSS) Homes were purchased with proceeds from a first time home buyer subdivision development project COCHRD did back in 2003. The program is anticipated to generate about $11,000 in income.
