Sustainable Communities Grant: San Francisco Bay Area Receives $5 Million

Pat Hoban-Moore announcing the HUD $5 Million Sustainable Communities grant

Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi provided comments

Director of Field Policy and Management Pat Hoban-Moore announced the HUD $5 million Sustainable Community grant on Monday, November 28. It is for the San Francisco Bay Area's Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG). Ms. Hoban-Moore joined Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, Union City Mayor Mike Green, EPA Regional Administrator Jared Blumenfeld and other officials at the announcement event.

It was held in the courtyard at the new and innovative Richardson Apartments (permanent supportive housing for extremely low income, chronically homeless individuals) in San Francisco. Attendees were provided a guided tour of a vacant tenant space, as well as the courtyard and roof garden. The event received broad news media coverage.

The $4,991,000 sustainable communities award will be additional funding for the Regional Prosperity Plan. The Plan will refine and implement elements of a growth strategy that most impacts low income residents in the Bay Area who are not participating in the region. The initiative will increase access to regional prosperity for workers who cannot make ends meet. It will do that by creating middle-income jobs and developing and preserving affordable housing in transit-served communities. Central to the plan is the integration of decision-making, knowledge building and public engagement across public agencies, community organizations, foundations, and regional policy agencies to build long term leadership capability.
