Carleton Court's seniors participate in their Neighborhood Network grand opening in Newark, DE

On August 24th, Carelton Court and Carrington Way celebrated the "Grand Opening" of their shared Neighborhood Networks Center (NNC) in Newark, DE. Carelton and Carrington's Neighborhood Networks Center has an after-school program from 4-6pm on Mondays and Wednesdays that allow the youth to get help with their homework. The NNC gives the youth a safe haven where they can relax and learn. Many of the students use the computers to play games related to math, reading, spelling, geography. The NNC also assists the senior population in the ommunity with maintaining their self sufficiency by providing them basic computer skills training, knowledge about medication research, Medicare savings plans, banking and so much more.

Launched in 1995 by HUD's Office of Multifamily Housing Programs, Neighborhood Networks is one of the first federal initiatives to promote self-sufficiency and help provide computer access to HUD FHA-insured and -assisted housing communities. To accomplish these goals, the community-based Initiative encourages property owners and managers to establish multiservice community learning centers that bring digital opportunity and lifelong learning to residents living in multifamily-insured and/or -assisted housing. Today, there are more than 1,400 Neighborhood Networks centers operating in HUD multifamily-insured and -assisted housing communities located in all 50 of the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
