Franklin, Georgia Benefits from Recovery Act

Soon a 1960s apartment, part of the Rolling Hills Apartment complex will be renovated in Franklin, Georgia, much to the enjoyment and appreciation of residents as the housing authority received Recovery Act funding in the amount of $156,254 to renovate a four bedroom apartment into two one bedroom apartment for the elderly and physically disabled.

The Recovery Act funding and subsequent renovation work also allowed for two full time staff members at the housing authority to be retained. Also, the funding being spent to convert a four bedroom apartment on Maple Street, built in the 1960s, into two one-bedroom apartments, one of handicapped accessible apartment, included re-roofing several other apartments in the "Rolling Hills" area. At this time, the roofing has been completed and the remodel of the apartment is in progress.

The length of the local area waiting list for one bedroom apartments and the growing need for providing apartments that meet the needs of handicapped clients were primary factors in deciding to leverage ARRA funding on the remodeling project.

This is the second four bedroom 1960s built apartment in "Rolling Hills" to be converted. Previously, Capital Fund monies were used to convert another unit to a three bedroom handicapped accessible unit. According to the housing authority, larger units in general need remodeling sooner than the smaller ones due to the number of people living in the apartment and the wear and tear the apartment receives. In addition, the demand for the larger apartments is not as great as the demand for one or two bedroom apartments.
