HUD AWARDS $7 MILLION TO REHABILITATE HOUSING FOR VETERANS LIVING WITH DISABILITIES

WASHINGTON - In an effort to assist veterans living with disabilities to remain in their homes, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) today awarded $7.4 million to modify or rehabilitate their homes, making them more accessible.

HUD grants will support eight national and regional organizations serving veterans across the country through the Department's Veterans Housing Rehabilitation and Modification Program (VHRMP). These organizations will make necessary physical modifications to address the adaptive housing needs of eligible veterans, including wheelchair ramps, widening exterior and interior doors, reconfiguring and reequipping bathrooms or adding a bedroom or bathroom for the veteran's caregiver to the home.

"Our veterans have given so much for country and now it's our duty to help them to remain in their homes," said HUD Secretary Ben Carson. "These grants will provide our local partners the resources they need to make adaptive changes to the homes of veterans living with disabilities, so they can maintain their independence."

The purpose of this pilot program is to assist our nation's low-income veterans living with disabilities who are in need of adaptive housing to help them regain or maintain their independence. Partnering with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, HUD is addressing these challenges by awarding competitive grants to organizations that primarily serve veterans and low-income people.
