HUD's Acting Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development (CPD) Mark Johnston made an official visit in early April to the Honolulu Field Office. It followed his Asian American-Pacific Islander visit to Guam.

He took the opportunity to visit with the staff of the Honolulu Field Office. Johnston met with City & County of Honolulu's Managing Director and discussed some local issues.

Johnston, Field Office Director Ryan Okahara and CPD Director Mark Chandler met with Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie to go over homeless programs. They also talked about affordable housing concerns and migrants.

While there, Johnston attended a monthly meeting of the Hawaii Housing Directors from the counties, state and Department of Hawaiian Homelands. His packed schedule allowed him to meet with the Hawaii nonprofits to discuss homelessness. Johnston's visit captured news media attention where he took the opportunity to speak about HUD's grants to Hawaii.
