City of Des Moines Staff and Federal Employees Conduct Sock Drive

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Des Moines Field Office in partnership with the Central Iowa Federal Executive Council conducted the second Annual Sock Drive in the Neal Smith Federal Building starting June 2014.

The sock drive is a continuation of an initiative to assist with homeless outreach and in the spirit of giving throughout the year. All socks collected were donated to Central Iowa Shelter and Services (CISS).

In addition to the sock collection at the Neal Smith Federal Building, Tayler Hulse spearheaded the collection efforts at the City of Des Moines. She is a senior at Lincoln High School and daughter of Des Moines Assistant City Manager Larry Hulse and HUD Financial Analyst Kathy Smouse-Hulse.

Tayler set up boxes and posted flyers at Des Moines City Hall and the Argonne Armory Building encouraging sock donations from city staff. Tayler is completing volunteer hours for the Silver Cord of Service Award.

This is a program to instill within students the importance of community service. It is also to encourage them to invest in their own education and in their community on a regular basis during their high school years.

The generous donations of socks by both federal and city employees resulted in the collection of over 330 pairs of socks. The socks were presented to Tony Timm, Executive Director of CISS. Tony thanked everyone for their efforts and stated that the shelter disseminates approximately 400 pairs of socks a week to persons in need.
