Huge Turnout for Grant Writing Training
for Illinois Faith Based and Community Groups

HUD's Midwest Region V Director, Joseph Galvan, welcomed some one hundred participants to the Region's first Grant writing training for Faith Based and Community Groups, by quoting from President Bush's State of the Union address, delivered just the night before. "…It's also important to strengthen our communities by unleashing the compassion of America's religious institutions. Religious charities of every creed are doing some of the most vital work in our country - mentoring children, feeding the hungry, taking the hand of the lonely. Yet government has often denied social service grants and contracts to these groups, just because they have a cross or a Star of David or a crescent on the wall..."

The purpose of the free two-day training session on January 21 and 22 at the Metcalfe Federal Building in Chicago was to provide representatives of faith and community based groups with Grant proposal writing Techniques. Topics included, How to access government funds; HUD programs available to Nonprofits; Organizational structure needed to secure government funds; HUD Common Factors for Award: The Ten Commandments of Grant Writing: How to Work with Local Governments; Organizational Capacity Building and the Importance of Coalition Building. A major highlight of the training was a step-by-step review of a successful HUD Grant Application. The training is part of the approach to "level the playing field" so that community and faith-based groups will have a better chance of obtaining federal funds to help carry out their crucial missions.
