Evansville and Vanderburgh County Indiana recently teamed up to launch Destination Home, a major planning effort to eliminate homelessness in the city and county over the next ten years. Calling themselves Hoosier partners, a group gathered on December 8th, 2004, in Evansville and unveiled "Destination Home: A Ten Year Journey To End Homelessness in Evansville and Vanderburgh County.

Evansville Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel, and others, noted that the plan calls for developing a management information system to monitor outcomes of the effort. Homeless prevention strategies in the plan include a goal of assisting 750 households with case management and rental subsidies, increasing the supply of single room occupancy housing by up to 500 units, transforming 1000 low-income renters into homeowners, and the developing 1500 additional subsidized rental units.

Along with the city and county, the Bussing-Koch Foundation, Trinity United Methodist Church Fund, and Evansville Coalition support the plan. The local Workforce Investment Board hosted the planning process. Mayor Weinzapfel (pictured at the front of the meeting) was joined by City Councils member Steve Melcher, County Commission President Catherine Fanello, County Board member, Royce Sutton, Evansville Coalition for the Homeless Executive Director Luzada Hayes, and United States Interagency Council Region V Coordinator Daryl Hernandez.
