Region V Director Joseph Galvan visited Gary, Indiana for a day of meetings with city, local, and community leaders. Mr. Galvan met with Mayor Scott King and visited a downtown homeownership site where new homes are being constructed. These are the first new homes constructed in the downtown area of Gary in many years. The Broadway Community Development Corporation is developing the site. It will have twenty-nine homes; some sold as subsidized with down payment assistance, and others as market priced properties.

Following the visit to the homeownership site, Mr. Galvan visited Oak Knoll Apartments, a HUD-insured assisted multifamily property where he called on their Neighborhood Network computer-learning center. He made encouraging comments to the students, and then visited with each student to learn of their progress. The Tree of Life Community Development Corporation (CDC) manages Oak Knoll. The learning center opened year ago. Tree of Life is a faith-based CDC that also operates a Youthbuild training program for young men and women in the building trades.
