Douglas Elementary in Kansas City, KS
Celebrates Fair Housing Month With HUD

April is National Fair Housing Month. In recognition, HUD is celebrating "Fair Housing Education Week" April 20-24, 2009. This national education project gives teachers, parents and their children a basic understanding of the Fair Housing Act and housing discrimination.

Fannie Woods is an investigator in the Kansas City, KS Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity. On Wednesday, April 22nd, Fannie visited Douglas Elementary School in Kansas City, Kansas to deliver an educational program about housing discrimination to approximately 50 5th grade students. Students watched a powerpoint presentation about the Fair Housing Act and then participated in a lively classroom discussion that reinforced what they had learned. A role-playing exercise underscored the importance of inclusion and equality. Fannie answered many excellent questions from the children. To wrap up the program, the students played a game of Fair Housing Act jeopardy. All in all, it was a day of learning and fun for all who participated.
