HUD Joins Russell Neighborhood Residents and Leaders in Celebrating the Beecher Terrace Phase I Groundbreaking

The bulldozers and tractors were out in full force during the official groundbreaking for Beecher Terrace Phase I. More than 100 stakeholders and residents were present during the momentous occasion, which marked the beginning of new construction on a portion of the former Beecher Terrace public housing site.

“These beautiful homes are only the beginning of the transformation of Russell Neighborhood through HUD's Choice Neighborhoods Initiative, which revitalizes neighborhoods and gives the people of the community better housing choices, better schools, additional access to transit, and new jobs,” said Carol Spencer, HUD Kentucky Office Public Housing Director.

Made possible by the HUD Choice Neighborhoods Grant awarded in December 2016 as well as other public-private funding, the new, four-story, energy-efficient building will feature 117 apartment homes for residents ages 55 and older. Construction is underway and apartments are expected to be available by mid-2020.

Mayor Greg Fischer officiated the celebration and recognized key partners such as: Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-3), Kentucky Housing Corporation CEO Edwin King, Louisville Metro Housing Authority Board Chair Manfred Reid, and others.
