HUD's Regional Director Kevin Keogh joined New Bedford Mayor Fred Kalisz at a dedication ceremony for a senior citizen development and adjoining health center.

The Caroline Street Apartments and Health Center is a redevelopment project partially funded by a $4.1 million Hope VI grant awarded to the New Bedford Housing Authority in 1999. The funding enabled the housing authority to address physical condition issues as well as to provide supportive living services for residents.

The Health Center offers primary and specialty health care for all seniors in the city, with special emphasis on residents of the Caroline Street Apartments, which now includes 58 units of public housing, four of which are fully handicapped-accessible.
