David Tille, HUD New England Regional Administrator, joins city of Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, local and state partners and elected officials and residents of Whittier Street public housing to break ground on phase one of the Whittier Street redevelopment.

The Boston Housing Authority broke ground on phase one of a comprehensive redevelopment of the Whittier Street public housing community recently. This redevelopment, made possible by a $30 million Choice Neighborhoods program grant will rebuild and preserve 200 existing public housing apartments by replacing them on- and off-site with an expanded program of 509 units of mixed-income rental housing and 14,225 square feet of commercial space.

The $30 million federal Choice Neighborhoods grant will leverage an additional $260 million in private and public funds to transform Whittier Street and the surrounding community by providing educational and economic opportunities for low-income residents and investing in community amenities and infrastructure that will improve the quality of life for all residents in the lower Roxbury neighborhood. The entire Whittier redevelopment will be completed by 2021.
