HUD AWARDS FUNDING TO FIGHT HOUSING DISCRIMINATION IN MASSACHUSETTS

BOSTON - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced today that it has awarded $345,000 to the Boston Fair Housing Commission (BFHC) and the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD) to enforce fair housing laws and help communities and housing providers to better understand their fair housing rights and responsibilities. The funds, part of more than $7.5 million distributed nationwide today, will also be used to promote the Department's new Equal Access to Housing regulation, which ensures that HUD housing and programs are open to all families, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status.

"Today's announcement demonstrates the Obama Administration's commitment to ending housing discrimination, no matter what form it takes," said Barbara Fields, HUD New England Regional Administrator. "With these funds MCAD and BFHC will partner with other state and local agencies and schools to continue their efforts to take on today's many fair housing challenges."

The Boston Fair Housing Commission will receive $150,000 to partner with Suffolk University Law School's clinical program to conduct systemic and complaint-based fair housing testing. Systemic testing will focus on LGBT, disability, and familial status issues, while the complaint-based testing will support Massachusetts state and local FHAPs, which have all submitted letters in support of the proposal. The project will also create a course on fair housing law at Suffolk Law.

The Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination will receive $195,000 to partner with the Housing Discrimination Project/Massachusetts Fair Housing Center and the National Center for Lesbian Rights to develop a fair housing panel and conduct fair housing testing in central and Western Massachusetts. The fair housing panel will ensure that Springfield, MA and surrounding localities are affirmatively furthering fair housing during the redevelopment planned as a result of the natural disaster that struck the area in 2011. The fair housing testing will focus primarily on LEP population, new immigrants, race, national origin, and families with children. This project will also incorporate education and outreach activities focused on LGBT, LEP, minorities, and families with children.

In awarding the funds, which are provided through HUD's Fair Housing Assistance Program (FHAP), HUD is responding to requests and suggestions from state and local government agencies that are seeking to partner with organizations that will assist in fair housing enforcement and outreach. The funds will help local communities learn more about their fair housing rights and housing providers meet their fair housing obligations, including those related to HUD's new Equal Access to Housing regulation.
