Girl Scouts Get a Hand Up

Cadet Scouts Kayla, Ling Ling and Linda share travel plans with Mark Adelson, Deputy Director of the Portland Housing Authority.

Three residents of Sagamore Village and long-time Girl Scouts at A Place for Girls, have been selected to attend special events this year. Thanks to a special grant from HUD to Girl Scouts of the USA/Girls in Public Housing, Ling Ling and Linda will be attending Wyoming Wildlife Wonders 2006 at the Teton Science School in Jackson Hole in July. They will be working with scientists and naturalists on a bird-banding project. Kayla, who wants to be a veterinarian, will get to "test her mettle" in December - in Minnesota! She will participate in Outward Bound and learn survival and dog sledding.

From now until their departures, the girls will be busy raising funds to supplement the grants and contributions. They will also spend time getting into shape for the rigors of their adventures. One recent weekend found them winter camping and enjoying a two-mile trek through the snow in five-degree weather.

"This is undoubtedly a marvelous opportunity for these young ladies. I am thrilled for them," says Veteran Scout Leader Marianne Chapman, who also leads several other troops in the Portland Housing Authority community. The Girl Scouts in Public Housing initiative brings Girl Scouting programs to girls who live in public housing communities in neighborhoods across the nation, as part of HUD's effort to create holistic housing environments where girls and families can thrive and grow stronger.
