Over 250 attendees participated in the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Training

The Mississippi HUD Office Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO) Division recently hosted Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) training in collaboration with the Mississippi Development Authority (www.mississippi.org/). The primary purpose of the training was to help HUD grantees comply with FHEO regulations to ensure that all citizens have equal access to discrimination-free housing opportunities. The event exceeded all expectations with a grand number of 265 attendees. Participants included entitlement communities, public housing authorities, sub-recipients of HUD funds, multifamily owners and property managers. The Mississippi Migrant Education Service Center (http://msmesc.blogspot.com/) was a special guest at the session. They provided invaluable information on how to market programs to Hispanic/Latino communities.

Ms. Marilyn Moore-Lemons, FHEO-Director, spearheaded the training. Naima Hull, Dita McCarthy, Ashley Drakes Lowe, Angie M. Lewis, Daniel Curley and Louis Ruckes, Jr., FHEO staffers, greatly contributed through presentations and technical assistance. The training focused on the AFFH requirements including: Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1974; American with Disabilities Act of 1990; Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Affirmative Furthering, Limited English Proficiency, Section 109 of Title I of the Housing and Community Development Act and Section 3 a provision of the Housing and Urban Development Act of 1968. You can access this and additional information on the Fair Housing page on HUD's website.

Equal access to housing is a right for all Americans.
