Fair Housing Training Targeted For Property Owners and Managers Renting To Housing Choice Voucher Holders

April marked Fair Housing Month and the HUD Mississippi Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO) staff teamed up with the Jackson Housing Authority to present its first exclusive landlord/property management training on fair housing issues. Sheila Jackson, Executive Director and Rieko Wells, Homeownership Coordinator, spearheaded this training as a way to ensure that housing choice voucher holders would have their fair housing rights respected.

Those attending were property owners and managers of private homes and corporate management companies with multifamily units. Ashley Drakes Lowe and Angie Lewis, FHEO Equal Opportunity Specialists, presented information on Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as amended, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1974/American with Disabilities Act of 1990. Several attendees represented to the Mississippi Field Office Director Jerrie G. Magruder that this training was very beneficial and that they would take advantage of the relationships that they formed with the FHEO staff to proactively look at fair housing issues in the future.
