HUD and Partners Bring Health to Communities

The public housing team of the HUD Jackson office has been collaborating with the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH), the Department of Human Services, and three public housing agencies in an effort to utilize housing as a platform to improve the quality of life of its residents. From the proper installation of a car seat, to a summer program for children, education on the perils of using tobacco, benefits of a good nutrition, and housekeeping tips to eliminate pests, the approach seeks to bring services to the underserved communities in Mississippi.

The Vicksburg Housing Authority organized a summer youth program with MSDH for children between the ages of 5 and 15 that included arts and crafts, a weekly visit to a swimming pool, and education about nutrition and the hazards of using tobacco.

Canton Housing Authority is working on safety, sanitation, and health classes.

The Leland Housing Authority has planned a Car Seat Inspection and Installation program; local law enforcement will be invited to assist in educating residents on proper seat installation. This is part of a program called Smart and Secure Children for children, ages 0-5 to improve education readiness by engaging parents. Leland Housing Authority is also promoting a collaborative effort to improve financial literacy. Furthermore, in collaboration with Delta Health Partners and Health Teens and Kids of Tennessee, they are combating childhood obesity among youth and will offer Camp Fit for children across Mississippi ages 6-14 during the month of September.
