North Carolina Housing Roundtable addresses affordable housing challenges post Hurricanes Matthew and Florence
HUD North Carolina Field Office Director Jody Moses recently participated in the North Carolina Housing Industry Roundtable in Raleigh as North Carolina faces a dire shortage of affordable housing exacerbated by the aftermath of two disastrous hurricane seasons-Hurricanes Matthew in October 2016 and Florence in September 2018. "Amazing roundtable. Kudos to Director Sprayberry (www.ncdps.gov/michael-a-sprayberry), State of North Carolina Emergency Management (www.ncdps.gov/ncem) Services and to FEMA (www.fema.gov/) for recognizing that a public-private partnership is imperative in developing affordable housing solutions in North Carolina." The Housing Industry Roundtable convened to broadly discuss the value added of private-public partnerships with senior leaders of key housing industry associations. The initial overarching objective was to provide leaders with situational awareness of the existing housing needs in North Carolina and promote an informal discussion as a primer to identify market-based solutions in subsequent roundtables and or forums. The private sector attendees garnered a greater understanding of the Federal and State agencies policies and approach to affordable housing, specifically after a disaster. The public sector attendees also acquired a better understanding of what requirements or elements need to be in place/present for private sector partnering. Conversations during the roundtable also quickly identified the value of a subsequent broader more inclusive housing industry forum or roundtable type discussion. The open forum will look to engage more private sector organizations and promote whole community involvement and methodologies in housing recovery.
