HOPE VI Projects Recognized for "Green" Practices

On June 27, 2008 the City of Jersey City recognized four local development projects for sustainable building practices in their first annual “Green Building Awards” ceremony. Along with three private developers, the Jersey City Housing Authority received a Green Building Award for two of its Lafayette Gardens HOPE VI family developments – Woodward Terrace and Pacific Court Townhouses.

Accepting the 2008 Jersey City Green Building Award are representatives from the Jersey City Housing Authority, the JCHA's developer partner, The Michaels Development Co., and the General Contractor, W.S. Cumby & Son.

Totaling 142 family units, these two developments were recognized for multiple sustainable building practices including:

  1. Conducting environmental remediation and building on a brownfields site
  2. Redeveloping urban land within close proximity to multiple modes of public transit and walking distance to institutions (schools, churches, library, post office, etc.) and retail establishments
  3. Using deconstruction in the demolition of existing buildings including reusing all crushed masonry on site
  4. Creating large storm water retention systems to reduce run off and improve water quality
  5. Using very low VOC coatings
  6. Using Energy Star compliant fixtures and appliances
  7. Meeting Energy Star requirements for insulation and high efficiency, low-e coated windows
  8. Including heating and cooling systems that exceed Energy Star program requirements
