The Newton Housing Authority is the only public housing authority in Sussex County, serving over 90 low-income elderly residents. It operates
with funds generated from subsidized rental payments and an annual payment for a cell tower on its roof. Funds for capital needs are issued by a formula
determined by the number of units in the building. With just 80 units, this income has not been enough to afford the cost of much-needed renovations and repairs. Rather than accepting the implications of its financial constraints, staff continues to be proactive in its approach to enhance the quality of life for its
residents and has rallied community support through an annual motorcycle run. The event has continued to grow in size from one year to the next and has helped
raise funds needed to make alterations to existing bathtubs to prevent residents from falling while trying to get in or out of their tubs. The monies raised
have directly impacted the lives of each of our residents, many of which have already fallen or have friends who fell and did not return home after surgery
and rehabilitation. Known as "aging in place," residents are growing older without having to move from their residence to another facility in order to secure necessary
supportive services. Rather than moving elsewhere, most commonly a skilled-nursing facility, residents continue to live on their own for longer periods of time
with the help of home-health aides and other services. The 5th benefit motorcycle run was held on Sunday, July 19, 2009 and drew over 500 participants. An old-fashioned chicken BBQ followed an escorted ride that
took bikers through scenic Sussex and Warren counties. There was music, prizes, vendors and was fun for people of all ages. Unlike many motorcycle events, the Liberty Towers event is unique in the sense

that it is the only public housing authority in the United States to promote
a motorcycle run in order to supplement federal funding. In fact, it has received a National Award of Merit from the National Association of Housing and
Redevelopment Officials for innovation amongst its peers and received a Congressional citation from Representative Scott Garrett for its effort.

Ultimately, the event is about helping a population who are unable to help themselves. It is about giving back to a generation of people who have given each of us so much and allowing them to maintain their independence for as long as possible. Executive Director, Kimberly Woodhull, PhD, reiterates that "there is no price tag that can be put on maintaining a sense of integrity and independence for our residents. There is only a cost for its loss."
