HUD Recovery Act funding is creating high-quality housing for homeless veterans and low-income families in Newark. On May 29, Newark Office Director Diane Johnson spoke at the dedication for Clinton Hill Apartments, a 56-unit rental housing development that received $3,185,000 in Neighborhood Stabilization Program II funds, as well as Federal Low Income Housing Tax Credits. The complex received 14 project-based Section 8 vouchers from the Newark Housing Authority, which have been made available to income-eligible veterans. The Clinton Hill facility fits in well with the architectural design of the neighborhood, and includes fully furnished apartments, computer rooms, a fitness center, meeting rooms, and community service space. The latter provides space for programs that serve veterans, other tenants, and members of the local community. The building is fully handicapped accessible, and features a rooftop garden designed to be used by the tenants for growing vegetables. Clinton Hill also includes a solar power array and is built to LEED Platinum standards.

Other speakers at the ceremony included Mayor Cory Booker and Maria Cuomo Cole, sister of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Chairman of HELP USA, which developed the complex in partnership with the Make It Right Foundation, founded by actor Brad Pitt. Episcopal Community Development was also heavily involved in this effort, by finding 50 qualified Newark residents to work on the project.
