U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity Director Wanda Nieves joined Passaic County and New Jersey State staff to highlight Fair Housing Month and speak to landlords and non-profits about housing discrimination. The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of dwellings, and in other housing-related transactions, based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status (including children under the age of 18 living with parents or legal custodians, pregnant women, and people securing custody of children under the age of 18), and disability.

About 30 landlords and non-profits attended the event at William Paterson University organized by Deborah Hoffman, Passaic County Director of Economic Development. Attendees also heard from Janice De John, Executive Director of the Passaic County Public Housing Agency, who provided guidance to landlords; and Edward H. Haas, Legal Specialist at the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, Department of Law and Public Safety Division on Civil Rights.
