HUD New Jersey Field Office Director Maria Maio-Messano and HUD Camden Promise Zone Community Liaison Barbara-Anne Gardenhire-Mills attended a Hopeworks 'N Camden presentation that highlighted their intern's work with Geographic Information Systems or GIS mapping. The students had participated in the National Civic Day of Hacking, and took on the challenge of using GIS mapping technology to track the progress being made in Camden.

Selected as a Promise Zone City in 2015, Camden is working hard to provide educational opportunities, job growth, economic development, and reduce crime; all to improve the quality of life of City residents. With the guidance of GIS Director Luis Olivieri, the young interns were able to map food accessibility and where more supermarkets and availability to healthy food was needed.

Hopeworks interns were also commissioned to assist with GIS mapping for utility New Jersey American Water and will continue to track data and map success stories in Camden.
