Residents of John W. Hyatt Court recently came together with federal and city officials to celebrate the grand opening of a newly remodeled community room as well as a playground, green space with beautiful landscaping, new decorative benches, a new exercise station that will provide amenities for hundreds of families and children at the housing development.

HUD New Jersey Field Office Director, and HUD NJ Senior Management Analyst Carleton Lewis attended the grand opening, joining Newark Councilman Augusto Amador, Newark Housing Authority Executive Director Keith Kinard and dozens of residents eager to begin using and enjoying the new features.

Hyatt Court, owned by the Authority and supported by HUD, contains 260 residential apartments. The upgrades to the development were financed by the HUD Capital Funding Program and contributions from the City of Newark, thanks to Mayor Ras Baraka and East Ward Councilman Augusto Amador.

Maria Maio-Messano of HUD stated, "Housing is so much more than a roof over our heads; it's the platform from where children and families launch their futures. A good quality of life for New Jerseyans is the goal of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and I am pleased that our agency is providing funding for this project that will enhance the lives of John W. Hyatt Court residents."
