Spruce Terrace, a HUD-subsidized senior building located in Kearny, New Jersey, is home to 74 seniors, who are blessed with many neighbors that have made their lives easier during the COVID-19 pandemic. Seniors, a vulnerable population, saw themselves isolated, lacking in entertaining activities, and forced to stay home from religious services.

Nearby Arlington's Women's and Junior Leagues moved quickly and donated snacks, produce, puzzles, and personal hygiene supplies. Goody bags filled with cards and letters of encouragement, helped seniors get through the stress of being under quarantine.

The pandemic put a crimp on shopping, and residents had to wait too long for groceries and other items to arrive. Spruce Terrace Service Coordinator Sonia Salazar created a pantry for residents, that allows them to access much needed non-perishables and other items. The Women's League, again, stepped up, as well did Rev. Joseph Mancini from St. Stephen's Church, The Salvation Army, Councilwoman Carol Jean Doyle, Councilman Gerald Ficeto, Midtown Pharmacy; and WellCare Healthcare's Dr. Nancy Tham and Claire Roudette.

Other Kearny neighbors donated pizza and handmade masks. Spruce Terrace received so many donations, it was able to share with Kearny Senior Residence, evidence that they are not alone, and that their community is eager to help.
