HUD Provides HUD HOME Funding for The Lantana, 100% Affordable, LEED Certified Homes in Newark

HUD Regional Administrator Alicka Ampry-Samuel delivered remarks at the grand opening of The Lantana, a 72-unit, 100 percent affordable residential building in Newark. RPM Developers Ed and Rich Martoglio hosted the event, which included Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Newark Councilmembers Anibal Ramos, LaMonica McIver, and resident Nicole Taylor.

The Lantana is a scattered-site, mixed-income rental development featuring 72 apartments at two sites in the Central Ward.

"Through the City of Newark, HUD provided $568 thousand in HOME Investment Partnership Program funding for affordable housing creation," said Alicka Ampry-Samuel, HUD Regional Administrator for New York and New Jersey. "The threat of climate change needs to be addressed with sustainable design and construction, and The Lantana is one step ahead, including sustainable building materials and other features that enhance residents' quality of life."

HUD provides HOME Investment Partnerships Program funding to local governments for housing activities such as tenant-based rental assistance, housing rehabilitation, homebuyer assistance, and new housing construction. HOME funding may also be used for site acquisition, site improvements, demolition, relocation, and activities related to developing non-luxury housing.

Lantana's 72-unit mix consists of ten (10) one-bedroom units, forty-two (42) two-bedroom units, and twenty (20) three-bedroom units. All units are affordable to low- and moderate-income households earning up to 80% AMI. Each apartment will feature a spacious layout, sustainable building materials, and ENERGY STAR appliances. Project amenities include:

• LEED certification.
• On-site parking.
• Laundry facilities.
• A community room with scheduled resident activities.
• A fitness center.

Eighty percent of the residences were occupied at the grand opening.
