From house-raisings to Casino employee outreach, the Reno Area Office and its partners celebrate Homeownership Month.

On June 5, Citizens for Affordable Homes, Inc. (CAHI), a HUD community housing development organization and FHA approved housing counseling agency congratulate new homeowners with a "wall raising" ceremony in Dayton, Nevada.

CAHI is assisting 28 families to become first time homebuyers in the Self-Help Program supported by the Department of Agricultures Rural Housing Services (USDARS). In addition to these 28 homes, plans are underway to construct an additional 52 units next year. As Nevada's most successful rural housing development organization, CAHI received the Five Star Commitment Award from Rural Services that recognizes success in expanding rural minority homeownership. Their continued efforts have resulted in an increase in minority self-help applicants by 700 percent.

On June 17th-18th, and for the second year in a row, Reno Area Office staff, together with HUD partner agencies conducted two days of outreach to the 2800 employees of the Reno Hilton Hotel and Casino. Hotel officials invited our agencies to host booths in the employee cafeteria to provide down payment assistance information, financial and credit counseling services, and registration for pre-purchase counseling classes. Several hundred employees took part in the event.
