Summer 2005 Mentoring Program Launched
by Las Vegas Field Office

Keith Haywood is being introduced to public service work through experiences and exposure to HUD at work. The Las Vegas Field Office has launched its 4th year of mentoring young adults. Las Vegas Field Office Director, Kenneth J. LoBene, states, "HUD opening its doors to our partners is an opportunity to attract young adults into the public sector and for the youth to understand the importance of giving back to their neighborhoods and communities".

The Summer Business Institute is sponsored by a partnership of Clark County Government and 70 Southern Nevada businesses. They promote summer employment for inner city junior and senior high school students. The Clark County Summer Business Development Division pays Keith.

Mr. Haywood is assigned to the office of Field Policy Management. He is required to work in various programs in support of HUD goals. With little training or supervision, he is able to complete all tasks required of him. He works with various computer programs, as well as retrieving valuable information required from the Internet.

The Las Vegas HUD office is proud to have such a great candidate. Keith begins his senior year (2006) in the fall at Bonanza High School. Remarkably, he has maintained a perfect school attendance record. He is in his 4th year with his school's band where he plays clarinet, 1st chair varsity.

He is a member of the National Honor Society and does community service. Mr. Haywood currently is working on applying for scholarships to various colleges. He is thinking of Majoring in Business Management and a Minor in Accounting or Education.

His resume reflects that he is a member of the Army Junior ROTC cadet program. He will start his fourth year with the rank of c/1st Lieutenant. His position is Executive Officer. Also, Keith is seriously thinking of the prospect of joining the United States Air Force and may apply for the USAF Academy.

The HUD Las Vegas Field office personnel have contributed to Keith's development. They urge him to do well in the military or public service. Bernard C. Yergeau, Operations Analyst (FPM) is the primary mentor for his training.
