On Saturday July 12, 2008 HUD's New York City office participated in an event for the public sponsored by Greater Allen Cathedral of New York Financial Ministry. The mortgage clinic served as a forum to help homeowners that are facing mortgage problems such as readjusting sub prime loans and potential foreclosures.
The event, which was free to the public, was held in the Greater Allen Cathedral in Jamaica, NY and succeeded in assisting borrowers who are struggling to make mortgage payments or who are at risk of defaulting on their mortgage. The trainers provided borrowers with information regarding the sub prime market and assistance with refinancing due to late mortgage payments. First time homeowners also received information on loan products and services available to them. The clinic was attended by 500 participants. The HUD workshops themselves attracted 100 participants that were offered extensive opportunities to ask specific questions and receive guidance. HUD staff also operated an information/resource table furnishing current information on HUD's new FHASecure refinancing initiative, the Federal Fair Housing Act, and various programs for potential first time home buyers. Through these efforts over ninety borrowers and potential first time homebuyers were provided personal and direct counseling to assist them with their housing situations.
The Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral Financial Ministry sponsored the clinic along with the Reverend Dr. Floyd H. Flake, Pastor, the Reverend Dr. Elaine Flake, Co-Pastor, and the Reverend Edwin C. Reed.
