On Friday, April 30, 2010, Vincent Hom, Director of Community Planning and Development in HUD's New York Regional Office, joined a host of elected, government, and hospital officials to celebrate the ribbon cutting at Downtown Hospital, part of the Weill/Cornell Medical Center in lower Manhattan, for the purchase and installation of an MRI machine. The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC), through HUD, provided a grant of $2.5 million to the Hospital for the acquisition of the MRI. This grant, on top of another $2.5 million going to the Hospital for the creation of a Health and Wellness Center, is the single largest grant under the category of "Community Enhancement" ever awarded by the LMDC. The event took on huge importance because it will be the only "public" MRI machine in lower Manhattan, with all others being housed in private medical facilities, and with the recent closing of St. Vincent's Hospital in Greenwich Village, Downtown Hospital is the only hospital serving the public below 14th Street.
