Regional Administrator Adolfo Carrión Celebrates Home Farming Day in Madison Square Park in Manhattan
|
Regional Administrator Adolfo Carrión touted the importance and impact of Home Farming in urban communities lacking access to fresh fruits and vegetables at a ceremony last week at Madison Square Park in mid-Manhattan hosted by Triscuit Crackers. The "Plantathon" at the park was the first-ever celebration in New York City where aspiring local, home farmers had the opportunity to plant and learn gardening tips by experts. Joining the celebration was also Urban Farming, a nationwide, nonprofit group that supports and encourages the establishment of gardens on unused land and space. Triscuit and Urban Farming have already collaborated to create 50 community gardens in 20 locations around the United States from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. and are expecting to develop 10 other urban farming projects in Cincinnati, Detroit, Minneapolis and Tampa, Florida.
