Regional Administrator Adolfo Carrión was joined by noted author and lecturer Dr. Cornel West in speaking at the 11th Annual New York State Supportive Housing Conference in New York City sponsored by the Supportive Housing Network of New York (SHNNY). Over 600 nonprofit providers, developers, investors, faith-based leaders and government agencies attended the event at the prestigious Marriott Marquis in mid-Manhattan. Some of the nonprofit providers came from as far away as Buffalo, Syracuse, and Rochester. The day was filled with lectures and break-out sessions focusing on budgetary, policy, and legislative issues surrounding supportive housing programs and funding. Mr. Carrión spoke in the morning touting the importance of SHNNY and how, through its myriad of programs, been able to transform thousands of homeless individuals into productive, self-sufficient citizens. Dr. West, who followed Mr. Carrión, touched on numerous subjects, but kept coming back to the theme of "helping others is God's work and the true basis of any democratic society." Mr. Ted Houghton, Executive Director of SHNNY, served as master of ceremonies.
