New York Regional Office Staff Walked to Help Feed Needy Families

To highlight the importance of feeding needy families, 15 New York Regional staff members, lead by Acting Regional Administrator, Mirza Orriols and Marilyn Freiser, Regional Support Manager for OCHCO, recently walked from their Regional Office in Lower Manhattan to a local supermarket via a historic route plotted by HUD intern Malika Murrell. Malika also made a handout with pictures and descriptions of the landmarks the staff passed along the route, and also included a list of preferred food items for the families. The group made it to the market, shopped, and walked back in exactly one hour. In addition, HUD staff in all program areas donated personal funds to designated shoppers in the group. The Food Emporium Supermarket gave the HUD staff their "bonus card" discount, and waived the delivery fee. The walk netted 222 pounds of food toward the New York Regional Office goal. The group is planning on another excursion in August.
