Over 500 supporters gathered together to celebrate the Long Island Housing Partnership's (LIHP) 25th Anniversary on April 11 at the Crest Hollow Country Club and listen to keynote speaker HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan talk about the importance of homeownership and the contribution the LIHP has made in creating hundreds of new homeowners since its creation.

The Secretary also spoke at length about the devastation of Hurricane Sandy and how the federal domestic agencies banded together to ensure a unified and coordinated response. As one example, the Secretary noted that in December 2012, President Obama created the Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force and appointed him as its Chair. In his remarks the Secretary mentioned Hurricane Sandy relief and recovery efforts on Long Island as well as the importance of preparing for similar storms in the future.

LIHP President Peter Elkowitz and Chairman of the Board Kevin S. Law described the numerous successes LIHP has achieved and expressed their sincere gratitude to the many individuals and companies who have been partners in that success.

LIHP's programs have expanded significantly through the years and now include construction; providing technical assistance to municipalities, developers and not-for-profit organizations in the construction of affordable workforce housing; education and counseling (from pre-purchase to default/foreclosure counseling); down payment assistance programs; neighborhood stabilization; residential rehabilitation; and one of the largest Employer Assisted Housing Programs in the nation.

The LIHP is an important partner to HUD and is also a HUD-approved housing counseling agency.
