HUD programs help to restore neighborhoods, such as the Cannery in Dayton.

The Cannery, an FHA-insured mixed-use, multifamily apartment complex in downtown, Dayton, Ohio, opened with great fanfare on August 16, 2002. The Cannery is a spectacular restoration, and conversion of six turn-of-the century industrial buildings into 156 historic loft-housing units. The Cannery was featured in the City of Dayton's Rehabarama (http://www.preservationdayton.com/Pages/Rehabaram.asp), highlighting six downtown properties for both rental and for-sale housing.

The Cannery, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is an example of how the programs of HUD can assist in downtown and neighborhood revitalization. The Citywide Development Corporation in partnership with the City of Dayton played a major role in this development and is also working to restore the Fairgrounds Neighborhood (http://www.citywidedev.com/genesis.php), and in so doing is creating affordable homeownership opportunities.
