HUD AWARDS $11.3 MILLION TO 18 OREGON HOUSING AUTHORITIES TO MODERNIZE PUBLIC HOUSING
Capital Funding Up 2.4 Percent From Last Year
SEATTLE, WA - Oregon's 18 public housing authorities have been awarded a total of $11,314,978 in 2008 capital
improvement funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to create new, modernize existing
or replace demolished public
housing units. In 2007, Oregon authorities were awarded $10,947,548 in capital improvement funds. Almost 6,400 Oregon families reside in
public housing units.
The HUD funds announced today went to housing authorities serving Klamath, North Bend, Portland, Salem,
Northeast Oregon and Clackamas,
Coos-Curry, Douglas, Jackson, Lane, Lincoln, Malheur, Marion, Polk, Umatilla,
Yamhill and Washington counties.
"More than 20,000 people live in housing units owned and operated by Oregon's 18 public housing authorities," said HUD Regional Director
John Meyers. "These funds - up 2.4 percent from last year, reflect HUD's commitment to
helping those housing authorities upgrade existing
units and replace demolished ones and thereby insure that these families reside in decent, safe and affordable housing."
Nationally, some 3,200 housing authorities annually receive capital improvement funds. Allocations are driven by a formula based on the
actual and projected modernization, rehabilitation and replacement needs of housing
authorities. The funds may not be used for providing
direct social services or for luxury improvements to public housing units. They may also be used to pay the debt service on bonds issued by
a housing authority to expand its affordable housing stock.
HUD released the 2008 capital improvement funds on June 13th, 2008.
