"There's No Place Like Home..."

Cindy Mayo waited 78 years to have a place to call her own. Now she has that and much more in her new home in Clairton, PA. At her age, Cindy was hesitant to become a first time homeowner, but her daughter Anita Hammons urged her forward and promised to serve as interior decorator extraordinaire when the deal closed.

Good to her word, Anita kept her promise to her mother. Any visitor to Cindy's new home can see the love and care that went into the hanging of every window treatment and the placement of every family memento. Her home pays homage to her past, yet displays great promise for her future.

Cindy's found her home through part of the Sanders Consent Decree for Desegretive Housing. The Sanders Decree was singed in Federal court in 1994, and required four housing agencies including HUD to work together to desegregate public housing in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

Through the tireless efforts of the Pittsburgh HUD Field Office staff as well as those of numerous community partners in Clairton, Ms. Mayo moved into her new home this past February after signing a Lease to Own Contract.

With her energy and vitality self evident and contagious to all who encounter her, it is easy to imagine that Cindy Mayo will enjoy this home for many years to come.
