Matthew Heckles Named HUD Regional Administrator
Former Maryland Assistant Secretary to lead HUD's Mid-Atlantic region

PHILADELPHIA - Today, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) officials announced President Joe Biden's appointment of Matthew Heckles as the Regional Administrator of HUD's Mid-Atlantic region.

Heckles will be responsible for the oversight and delivery of HUD programs and services throughout Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia. He will serve as HUD's liaison to elected officials, congressional delegations, city managers, stakeholders and customers.

Prior to joining HUD, he served as the Assistant Secretary and Director of the Community Development Administration at the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. In this capacity, he oversaw a range of operations and services from the administration and financing of single-family mortgage and multifamily development financing to housing rehabilitation and local government infrastructure programs. Most recently, his efforts centered on COVID-19 relief programs that offered forbearance for small businesses as well as tenant and homeowner assistance.

"HUD's regional administrators are instrumental in carrying out the Biden-Harris Administration's commitment to providing all Americans access to safe and affordable housing," said Michele Perez, Assistant Deputy Secretary for Field Policy and Management. "Matthew's background and expertise in housing and community development will bring even more opportunities to struggling, marginalized communities. I'm excited to have him on board, leading our Mid-Atlantic regional operations."

Prior to his service in Maryland, Heckles worked in various positions at the Delaware State Housing Authority for more than 12 years.

"Throughout my time in state and local government, I was an advocate for affordable housing—focusing on the equitable delivery of assistance to vulnerable families and individuals and helping to preserve critical public housing stock," said Heckles. "As the country builds back from the economic impacts of COVID-19, I will continue advancing this work in my new role at HUD. I look forward to supporting states and cities in increasing affordable housing for families in the region."

Heckles earned a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in economics and international relations from the University of Delaware.
