On July 24th, Faith and Community Based partner Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota (http://www.lsssd.org/) dedicated Northport Apartments, the newest affordable housing option for residents of North Sioux City. The development of Northport Apartments was made possible because of the leadership and a generous land donation by the North Sioux City Economic Development Corporation; a $1.38 million HUD grant using HUD's Section 202 Program, and a $200,000 grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines' Affordable Housing Program (http://www.fhlbdm.com/ci_ahp.htm). The new facility designated for senior citizens aged 62 and over, includes 20 one-bedroom units, and a two-bedroom unit for an on-site manager. The total cost of the project was $1.58 million.

The first tenants will be moving into apartments featuring central air and fully equipped kitchens sometime in the middle of August. Qualified tenants pay the greater of 30 percent of their adjusted income, or 10 percent of their gross income for rent.

The complex also features on-site laundry, a spacious community room with kitchen, security entrance, and a manager's office. The large entry features a sitting area where residents can sit and visit, watch television, or just relax with a cup of coffee.

The ribbon cutting ceremony featured comments from North Sioux City Economic Development officials, North Sioux City Council members, representatives of Senator Daschle and Senator Johnson's offices, the president of Halman Construction, and Sioux Falls Field Office Director, Sheryl Miller. Following the ceremony, a reception and tours of the new apartments were provided.
