Holiday Tree in State Capitol at Pierre

Every year hundreds of visitors pass through the State Capitol in Pierre (http://www.state.sd.us/governor/trees2003/Default.asp) to view the Christmas tree display. More than 60 decorated trees are on display in the Capitol hallways. The trees are decorated and sponsored by various agencies and groups throughout the state.

The SD Homeless Consortium (http://www.sdhda.org/sdhc/index.htm) sponsors one of the prominent trees on display. The display gives the consortium an opportunity to bring awareness of homelessness in SD to those who otherwise may not be aware of the issues.

Last year, through the efforts of the consortium, agencies within the state were awarded over $2 million in HUD grants to combat homelessness in South Dakota. These funds help individuals and families acquire transitional and permanent housing as well as provide case management services.

If you would like to assist the homeless, volunteer opportunities are available. If you are homeless or know someone who is homeless, assistance is available.
