HUD Grants $35 Million in HOPE VI Funds
for Redevelopment of Uptown Memphis

On October 22, the City of Memphis announced its redevelopment plans for Uptown Memphis, an area covering 125 city blocks. The redevelopment is funded by $35 million HOPE VI grant from HUD, the Shelby County Government, State of Tennessee Low Income Housing Tax Credits and private developer Uptown Partnership, a Belz-Turley Community Development Company. When complete, Uptown Memphis will include 1,100 single-family housing units (780 rental and 320 for ownership). Lauderdale Courts, a 449-unit PH project, although not part of the Hurt Village HOPE VI site, is being renovated as part of the City's "Uptown" project. Closing for this mixed-finance renovation project is scheduled for December 2002. This site will be completely renovated but retain the original exterior appearance as the teenage home of Elvis Presley.
