All families living in public housing in Kingsport were invited to attend the June Father's Day activity meant to help reunite fathers with their families and which supports the National Father's Day Initiative promoted by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development.

The theme of Kingsport's event was "Empower Father's & Build Healthy Families." Nearly 50 residents attended, and were treated to lunch consisting of hotdogs and chili, chicken salad sandwiches, baked beans, fresh vegetables, and cookies.

"This was a great event, and we appreciate it," one father said.

Craft stations were set up, and children were encouraged to make cards for their fathers. Games were also held, and children could get their faces painted in fun colors and designs. Kids were also encouraged to dress up in fun costumes at the KHRA photo booth. And a disc jockey played tunes and held a limbo contest.

Meanwhile, fathers (and mothers) were encouraged to learn about training and educational opportunities from KHRA's partnering organizations, which included Northeast State Community College, the University of Tennessee Extension, the Tennessee College of Applied Technology, the Sullivan County Health Department, Frontier Health, Eastern Eight Community Development Corporation, Youth Build, the Tennessee Department of Labor Career Center, and Appalachian Community Federal Credit Union.
