Recently, the Knoxville Multifamily Staff representing the Knoxville HUD Office participated in the much-anticipated Cedar Point Living Center senior citizens ribbon cutting ceremony in Tazewell, Claiborne County, Tennessee. The grand opening and ribbon cutting at Cedar Point Living also featured tours and refreshments. The Senior Citizens Home Assistance Service, Inc. (SCHAS), formerly Five Rivers Service, lead the effort and has been providing care to senior citizens and disabled persons in their home since 1970.

"The process has been a pleasant journey because of the people at HUD, FHLB, Pinnacle Bank, Jack Spratt Construction, Smee Busby Architects, Claiborne County Government, American Apartment Management, and Susan Ballard Interior Design," said Tim Howell, CEO, SCHAS. "These partnerships created a building that is beautiful, modern, and is ready to house seniors for years into the future. We at SCHAS and Cedar Point Living look forward to serving the elderly in the region with an affordable option for housing."

SCHAS serves Claiborne County, one of the poorest counties in the region. Cedar Point is part of the effort to provide affordable housing for seniors and the disabled. Cedar Point Living is HUD Section 811 subsidized housing complex for those seniors, who are 62 or older and have an income below 80 percent of the median. They will only pay 30 percent of their monthly income as rent. The Section 8 Housing Assistance Payments (HAP) contract subsidizes 9 of the 10 units in the group home for the elderly and disabled.

The transfer of ownership and assumption of the HAP to Senior Citizens Home Assistance Service, Inc. a non-profit entity, directly contributed to the facility being renovated to maintain the affordable housing resource for the elderly and disabled in the community.
