HUD Awards Chattanooga $1.65 million grant to combat Lead Hazards and Develop Healthy Homes
HUD announced in March 2018 a new $1.65 million Lead Hazard Control Grant and Healthy Home funds grant award to the City of Chattanooga focused on investing in healthy outcomes for low income individuals, families and children. Chattanooga will receive $1,500,000 in Lead Hazard Control Grant funds and $150,000 in Healthy Home funds. The funding will provide for the lead-based paint remediation of 75 homes, outreach to over 200,000 Chattanooga residents, and training for at least 50 individuals to become lead-based paint hazard control professionals. "The leadership of Chattanooga and partners are to be congratulated for their demonstrated willingness to work in a public-private endeavor to help those we mutually serve," said Sernorma Mitchell, HUD Nashville Field Office Director. Healthy Home assessments will be conducted and with 40 homes receiving additional funding for interventions such plumbing, electrical, and safety repairs. This funding and through the efforts of the city will help increase the number of lead-safe and healthy homes and reduce the number of children who may be facing long-term detrimental results from exposure to lead-based paint resulting in childhood lead poisoning. Partners include Chattanooga-Hamilton County Health Department, Chattanooga Housing Authority, Habitat for Humanity, Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprises, Southeast Tennessee Human Resource Agency, University of Tennessee Extension, Chattanooga Head Start, Green Spaces, Chattanooga Community Housing Development Organization,and the Chattanooga Fire Department. ### |
