Over 50 people gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of Taylor Garden Apartments, at 1800 South West Temple Street in Salt Lake City on July 19, 2014. A number of development partners took shovels to a mound of dirt to mark the beginning of the project.

Taylor Gardens will be home to seniors, victims of domestic violence, persons with physical disabilities, veterans and persons who are chronically homeless. The complex will have 112 senior units (age 55+), 98 one-bedroom units and 14 two bedroom units.

Sixty-six of the units are supported by Low Income Housing Tax Credits. Those will be leased to residents with incomes at 25% - 49% Area Median Income. Rents will range from $248 to $663 per month. The remaining 46 units will be rented to those earning no more than 80% Area median Income.

To meet the housing needs of special needs populations, 11 of the apartments will be set aside for individuals with physical disabilities. Additionally, six units will be leased to survivors of domestic violence. Six will be leased to veterans. Five will be for persons exiting homelessness.

The project will be styled similar to Taylor Springs, an adjacent housing project. Taylor Gardens and Taylor Springs were developed and managed by the non-profit arm of the Housing Authority of Salt Lake City.

Taking part in the ceremony were HUD Field Office Director Kelly Jorgensen, Terry Feveryear, Executive Director of the Housing Authority of Salt Lake City, representatives of the Salt Lake City Council and the Mayor's Office, the Utah Housing Corporation, the State of Utah and Salt Lake County. Anita Short, Public Housing Revitalization Specialist, Sr. Management Analyst, Pauline Zvonkovic and HUD intern Ashly Stone also attended the event. The project should be ready for occupancy in 18 months.
