The annual statewide poster and essay contest awards ceremony, sponsored by the Wisconsin Fair Housing Network, took place in the Governor's Conference Room at the State Capitol in Madison on June 27, 2003. HUD Midwest Regional Director Joe Galvan was joined by the Governor's wife, First Lady Jessica Doyle, in the presentation of the 26 awards on behalf of the Fair Housing Network. Michael Wright, Jr. of Milwaukee is pictured here with the Regional Director and First Lady.

The contest was held to honor the 35th anniversary of the passage of Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 and the 38th anniversary of the passage of the Wisconsin Open Housing Law. The purpose of the contest is to educate Wisconsin children in the concepts of freedom of choice and equal access in housing. All of the contest winners received framed certificates, along with checks and 2004 Fair Housing Calendars donated by the Fair Housing Network, and fair housing pencils and bookmarks from HUD. The 2004 calendars feature posters and essays from previous contests. The entries from this year's contest will appear in a 2005 calendar.

The Wisconsin Fair Housing Network is a coalition of individuals, public agencies, and private organizations created by HUD and the Wisconsin Realtors Association to provide education and to promote fair housing throughout Wisconsin. The Fair Housing Network annually sponsors a fair housing conference, fair housing awards to recognize individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to further fair housing, and the fair housing poster and essay contest for school age children.
